Is it coming up to the big day and you’re still not sure what to buy for a loved one who is conscious about what they buy? Worried what to buy for the person who doesn't buy much? Don’t panic, our last minute gift guide gives you some tips to prevent you panic buying and hopefully purchasing something they will actually love. This guide will help you avoid buying online and to purchase on the high street with an eco friendly focus! And it’s not just about Christmas, these ideas could be useful for birthdays too.
Some general tips, try to buy local if you can, think about what they need and would buy anyway, but you could perhaps upgrade it? For example your loved one may practice frugalism tied into purchasing only what they need, so a really lovely pair of socks would be a tiny but very appreciated luxury.
Include the receipt. Even if they adore their gift, they may want to swap out the size for example if they know they will keep hold of their gift for life.
If you’re super short on time, but are trying to avoid shopping at those online shops that they hate, try finding a local plastic free or ethical shop. They always have lots of beautiful gifts, or even day to day items that your loved one might use regularly. Unless expressed I would personally avoid reusable water bottles, simply because usually zero wasters will have their well loved bottle. Ask the people working in the shop for help too.
Some specific inspiration…
A voucher for a local restaurant they love
A voucher for their local bookshop
Ethique bars (the most luxurious zero waste shampoo, soap and my favourite is the cleanser. You can purchase at Holland and Barrett).
Booja booja chocolates (vegan, organic beautiful truffles, purchasable in many indie plastic free shops).
Depending on their circumstances, something on the plant spectrum, from a tiny airplant or a tree for their garden.
A board game, if they’ve got people to play with! 'Something Fishy' is so much fun.
A jigsaw puzzle
Items on their food shop they would usually buy, but perhaps a little more luxurious? Or even just a shop delivered to their door?
An experience day, the more local to them the better. For example these foraging days
Lessons in something they are keen to pick up, pottery, cooking?
A good quality reusable item (again, avoiding the water bottle) but perhaps a stainless steel tiffin, or large cotton tote?
Something you’ve made, like homemade decorations, beeswax wraps.
Your time, either having fun or helping them with something they need help with, like a garden tidy up
Spa day voucher
A hot composter (if you can get one at your local garden centre)
The last tip, if you’re struggling, is to ask them. A surprise gift is always nice but if you’re buying for someone that is mindful about their impact, they might like to suggest something.
