Wild deodorant and case

I love natural deodorants, so much so I wrote a natural deodorant guide to help people switch over, and frequently review natural deodorants.

This time, the review is for Wild deodorant. You may have seen or heard of Wild deodorant as they commonly use affiliate marketing, so influencers are often seen doing ads. They also sell in a huge variety of high street shops and supermarkets in the UK. They are selling an increasingly varied product range too, including refillable soaps and lip balm.

I love giving new products a go, and when my staple personal choice of either homemade or Cacao pow ran out about two years ago, I gave Wild a go. I got the fresh cotton and sea salt, but, I only bought the refill. You see, I didn’t want to buy into the whole reusable packaging before I could trial the product. I have found, that natural deodorants work differently for everyone. I wanted to check it was viable for me before committing to the whole set up.

The fresh cotton and sea salt had such a wonderful clean fresh scent and I found the deodorant was good. The scent lasts a long time and the protection is good too. It is not really high strength protection that will keep you covered through heavy sports use, but day to day it kept me supported. Of course, if you are a naturally sweaty person, this might be quite light coverage.

I did find that some items of my clothes did get marks. The formula is obviously thicker than liquid deodorant’s, so it's not surprising that there was a bit of residue left on clothes. This could be frustrating if you have high end clothes that you want to keep tarnish free under your pits. For me, a natural deodorant trumps a small amount of tarnish, especially as many of my clothes do already have marks from natural deodorant, and I have grown to dislike liquid deodorants now.

The product lasts about a month of daily use, not all that long compared to competitors- some natural deodorants are near indestructible, lasting months and months. I tend to find the softer deodorants don't last as long, but are easier to apply.

At the end of last year I decided to invest in the packaging and three refills, whilst they were on offer directly on the Wild website. I still do very much prefer my own options but wild is a great option for throwing into my bag at the gym or when travelling, or when I don’t have time to source or make my first choice. Part of this purchase also meant signing up for a subscription postal service of refills. For some, this is very handy.

The scent option that I received this time was tropical jungle. After liking the first scent, I was surprised that this one didn’t seem to work as well? It doesn’t last as long, and this particular small is not really my cup of tea, it's more masculine than I would pick. Additionally, I have found the effectiveness of the second scent is less than the original one I purchased.  I would be really interested if anyone else has noticed this? This has been the case for 2/3 refills of the same scent. I can’t depend on them. I would have thought the formula would be the same across different scents, I am unclear why it doesn't work as well for me.

Over time, I have noticed the case is showing some signs of wear, but to be fair it is thrown in gym bags and handbags!

A small pet peeve is their marketing- the push for seasonal scents and seasonal packaging. Like the push for valentines deodorant cases through influencer marketing. A seasonal, reusable deodorant cover seems completely unnecessary.

All things considered- like the length of use of each refill, I find the cost of Wild deodorant is quite high, especially compared to ‘normal’ deodorants. Check out their websites for sales, if this puts it more in your price range.

So in terms of a rating, it’s hard to judge this one, as I have had mixed results myself. Wild deodorant is not cheap, so if your budget is tight, try making your own and or keeping an eye on their website if you fancy changing up your fragrance etc. I’ve also had mixed results with different scents, so I would recommend trying before you invest in a number of the same scent. It is handy that I can buy Wild refills in my local supermarket, and that just about sums it up for me- Wild is a convenience purchase. So if you struggle for time, want to invest in plastic free but don't have time to make some yourself, it might be for you.

News. Just before publishing this blog, that has been in review and writing for a year, came the news that Wild is being bought by Unilever.

For me, this means I will no longer be purchasing refills from Wild. At the end of the day, I didn’t find Wild a perfect fit for me anyway so this isn’t too much to give up. I will simply find alternatives that suit the need for occasional convenience whilst supporting small business.
